The team collected information from 71 SNAP-authorized stores in the eight-county region. Additionally, approximately 36% live 1-10 miles away from a supermarket or a grocery store and often do not have access to transportation. She added that 24% of the population in those counties are low income and around 10% receive SNAP benefits, which limits the stores where they can purchase food. “The predominant food retail format in all counties was convenience stores,” Fan said. Of the counties evaluated, three had a supermarket, one had only a convenience store, and the remainder had a small number of grocery stores. These counties were Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, Leflore, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower and Washington. In 2019, the researchers used the Market Basket Assessment Tool - a retail environment audit instrument - to evaluate differences in prices and availability of healthy foods in the eight counties with the highest obesity rates in the Delta region. The Delta region of Mississippi has some of the greatest income inequality, highest rates of poverty and highest prevalence of preventable, nutrition-related chronic diseases in the country. Mississippi has a large rural population and is among the states with the highest obesity rates in the country, the scientists noted. “Consumers who do not purchase most of their food at supermarkets have been found to consume fewer fruits and vegetables than people who purchase most of their food at supermarkets.” “Poor food environments, such as those analyzed in our study, can directly affect dietary quality,” Fan said. This food environment is associated with household food choices and the ability of consumers to access and afford healthy diets, said Fan, who collaborated on the study with Elizabeth Canales, assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Mississippi State University. The findings have important implications not only in the Mississippi Delta, but for other regions of the country where convenience stores and dollar stores generally comprise the highest proportion of stores available, noted Linlin Fan, assistant professor of agricultural economics in the College of Agricultural Sciences. That is one of the conclusions of a study conducted by an agricultural economist at Penn State who examined the food environment for residents in the Mississippi Delta, a region that has one of the highest obesity rates in the U.S. Limited availability of affordable and healthy foods can contribute to poor health outcomes, especially for residents of rural and low-income regions. ![]() That version already exists for the Windows and the Mac OS X platforms. The developer’s website refers to a new Version 2.6.11. GimpShop was left behind with version 2.2.11.īut some hope for an updated version of GimpShop may still exist. It seems that the Linux architecture and GIMP itself have moved on. Having a more intuitive interface was the attraction that drew me to the GimpShop promise. But I still have to think out the correct combination of drop-down menu options and right-click access that works to supplement the menus. I learned proficiency in navigating my way through its disjointed three unattached panels. But therein lies the problem - running the hack. Indeed, after running Moschella’s GimpShop hack, Photoshop and GIMP are strikingly similar. Many of the menu options and even whole menus were recreated to faithfully reproduce a Photoshop-like experience. As he explains in his blog, he renamed and reorganized GIMP’s tool sets, options, windows and menus so they closely resemble Adobe Photoshop’s menu structure and naming conventions. But finessing unorthodox characteristics in GIMP is not such a bad idea.Ĭlearly, that was GimpShop creator Scott Moschella’s intent. ![]() Settling for second best is not a real problem for typical users. Of course, if you never used Photoshop, you simply struggle to learn the user-unfriendliness of GIMP. But it is sometimes more awkward to use and misses a few of the core features available in Photoshop. GIMP has similar capabilities as Photoshop. It is a clone-like remix of GIMP to make the menus and functionality almost one with the Photoshop experience. GimpShop modifies the GIMP user interface. It is a very close first cousin to Photoshop. It is a free powerhouse that sets the Linux standard for displaying and tweaking all things photographic on a computer screen. GIMP is Linux Speak for GNU Image Manipulation Program. So one of the few Linux options for high-end photo manipulation software is GIMP, which runs on a variety of operating systems. It also is not an available option if you do not already have the very expensive Windows OS as well as the Photoshop software. But that option just presents another layer of workarounds. You can also run Photoshop on a Linux computer running a virtual box containing a Windows operating system. For those with a Windows version of the app, getting Photoshop to run suitably, if at all, under WINE in Linux is frustrating at best. Alas, it is very costly and not available in a free Linux version. Perhaps the gold standard bearer in that category is Photoshop. But few programs tooled for the Linux environment offer the professional-strength options of high-end commercial photo manipulation software. Some of them received favorable reviews in the annals of Linux Picks and Pans - for example, Shotwell, FSpot and GIMP. Linux users have an impressive cache of photo editing tools available. As great as the concept of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) is, not every Linux software package serves the greater good. But my experience this week laid bare a larger issue. I usually set aside badly performing open source products when I test them rather than waste readers’ time with negative reviews. The other driving factor was my desire to produce graphics for a project consuming too much of my time without retreating to that other operating system. One aspect was my weekly quest for software to review for this column. But my disappointment in not finding salvation from resorting to a return to Microsoft Windows caused me to question my decision years ago to convert to Linuxism.Īll of this stemmed from a two-part need. Often the plugins don’t work, fonts are messed up, sometimes its slow, the list of issues goes on and on and getting Photoshop to work on WINE or another Virtual Machine isn’t easy, not all, you have to do a lot of useless stuff just to load it up right, smh! Believe me, it’s better to use the following Photoshop alternatives for your Ubuntu OS.Actually, my faith in the Linux OS is still intact. There is a work around that people use with software like WINE or running a Virtual Machine, I have used both and honestly it still doesn’t compare to the original Photoshop which runs smoothly on a Mac or Windows system. No, you unfortunately can NOT run Photoshop on Ubuntu or any other Linux distro, at least not naturally, by naturally I mean you can’t just go to and download the Linux version of Photoshop. ![]() Total Commander 10.50 Full Version Rar (67.
